String Quartet  THEME, VARIATIONS and MARCH on “I Had a Dream Last Night”

It is thought this string quartet was composed at the beginning of the 1930’s or even earlier.  Here Rudolf Hindemith used the same theme as for the first of his Six Sonatinas for Piano, which premiered in October 1933 and was apparently rearranged some time later.  The first sonatina mentioned contains eight variations and the string quartet seven, whereby the last one in the string quartet is a march, which does not appear in the first sonatina.

Additionally, the string quartet’s musical arrangement differs greatly from the notation of the first sonatina.  The only elements that can be described as identical are the third variation in the string quartet and the second in the Sonatina for Piano.  The form of the remaining movements is entirely different; some of them have their own identity musically speaking.  Whether the string quartet inspired the piano sonatina or vice versa can no longer be determined today.  In my opinion, however, the manuscript of the string quartet indicates it existed before the composition of the first sonatina.  That means, it could have been composed before the end of the 1920’s.

Quatuor à cordes: THEME, VARIATIONS et MARCHE sur «J’ai rêvé la nuit»

Le quatuor à cordes a probablement été composé au début des années 30 — ou bien éventuellement avant encore. Rudolf Hindemith utilise ici le même thème que dans ses Six sonates pour piano jouées pour la première fois en octobre 1933, qui ont toutefois, apparemment été retouchées. La première sonate mentionnée contient huit variations. Par contre, le quatuor à cordes en contient sept le dernier mouvement duquel est en outre une marche qui n’apparaît pas dans la sonatine. En général, l’élaboration musicale du quatuor à cordes diffère distinctement du texte de la première sonatine. Seules la troisième variation du quatuor à cordes et la deuxième de la sonatine pour piano peuvent être considérées comme identiques. Par leur construction, les autres mouvements varient considérablement les uns des autres et trouvent leur propre identité. Il n’est guère possible aujourd’hui de déterminer avec précision si le quatuor à cordes a été inspiré par la sonatine pour piano ou inversement. A mon avis, des indices du manuscrit du quatuor à cordes laissent penser qu’il a existé avant la composition de la première sonatine. Il pourrait probablement avoir été composé avant la fin des années 20.
